Following amendments agreed by the ILO in April 2014 and implemented from January 18, 2017, the MLC ensures protection for seafarers, including settling unpaid wages and other entitlements in cases of abandonment.

Under the MLC, ships must carry certificates from a recognised insurer or financial guarantor that confirm cover for any costs resulting from crew repatriation, and up to four months of owed wages and entitlements if crew members are abandoned*. Additionally, a separate certificate is mandatory to cover potential claims related to seafarer injury, disability, or death during service**.

** MLC Standard A4.2, as amended

MLC Extension Clause

Under the MLC Extension Clause, we will pay seafarers’ claims that fall under the Regulations and Standards specified in the MLC Certificates. However, please note that if payments fall outside the scope of standard cover, members will be obliged to reimburse us.

Application form

To request an MLC Certificate, download the application form below. Please note the application form must be printed on company-headed paper and signed by an authorised signatory.

You must be authorised to sign the form on behalf of all joint entrants on the policy, which also confirms they understand and agree to their responsibilities under the MLC Extension Clause.

Members and joint entrants are also jointly and severally liable for any MLC liabilities falling outside of standard P&I cover, meaning individual parties within the group can be held responsible for the entire amount owed - not just their proportional share.

Please enter the ships requiring MLC Certificates by completing the Excel spreadsheet schedule below and returning it with your signed application form to your broker or usual club contact.

Where possible, please also let us know the estimated maximum number of seafarers serving on board each ship to help us properly assess your risk and cover.

Once received, remember to print your MLC Certificates and display them in a prominent place on board and available to your crew.
